Dagny's Bracelet

I am going to take a moment to reflect on Dagny's bracelet.  One of my favorite scenes from any book, EVER.  For those of you who have not read Atlas Shrugged, (you should) I will elaborate on this.  A prominent capitalist gives his wife a bracelet made from his revolutionary steel, for their anniversary.  She is a smug so and so and kind of snickers and holds contempt for him over this gift.  Dagny is also a doer and maker of dreams coming into reality.  She sees the value of the bracelet and trades her diamonds for it. I was a little disappointed in the way the movie played this scene but the message is clear. This is the defining moment of where I believe value should be placed.  A good idea executed to it's fullest is worth more than all of the diamonds one can buy.  Diamonds only have value because someone says they should.  Ideas are the most valuable thing a person can own.  Bringing the ideas to fruition is the most valuable thing you can do.

Some people balk at my way of raising my kids.  Yes, they do make a monstrous mess of things quite often.  Yes, sometimes I want to jump off of the highest thing I can find. What it boils down to is so what they "ruined" many dollars in jewelry findings.  So what, I find "special potions" all over my house.  What I truly believe is my kids are getting the chance to have ideas.  What I hope is I give them access to the road of confidence they need to make their dreams become real.  I have many special jewelry pieces that my babies have made.  I will keep them forever.  They are as good as mine.  :)

Lately. I have felt like I need Gleemonex, 72 degrees in the head, all the time.  Screw that!!  I really think I have been given this cancer to kick my butt into gear on finding my dreams.  Sometimes I am  a hot head and I like it.

Off to dream about Dagny's bracelet.  That woman has taste.

  1. I have always loved that scene, too -- one of Rand's best. The movie producers are selling replicas of the movie version of the Rearden Metal bracelet at atlasshruggedpart1.com
